Groundwater

Groundwater is an important source of drinking water throughout Kanabec County. Rain and snowmelt slowly move through the soil and recharge the groundwater systems beneath us, linking the health of the land surface to the quality of the water below. Failing septic systems, abandoned wells, spills, runoff, and certain land management practices can all create pathways for pollutants to reach groundwater over time.

Kanabec SWCD works with landowners, communities, and partners to support groundwater protection through local guidance, technical assistance, education, and conservation projects. This includes efforts related to well water awareness, septic system compliance, soil health, runoff reduction, and practices that help water soak into the ground naturally.

Because groundwater is underground, contamination often is not immediately visible. Once groundwater becomes polluted, it can be extremely difficult and costly to clean up. Protecting groundwater today helps protect drinking water, lakes, rivers, wetlands, and long-term water quality throughout Kanabec County.
