About Us

The Kanabec Soil and Water Conservation District (Kanabec SWCD) is a special district, also known as a political subdivision of the state, organized under the 1937 Minnesota Soil Conservation Districts Law. Kanabec SWCD is governed by an elected five-member Board of Supervisors that represent their respective Districts. Our responsibilities as outlined in Chapter 44A Soil Conservation in the 1938 Supplement to Mason's Minnesota Statutes (pp. 905) include, but are not limited to:

  • control and prevention of soil erosion;
  • preservation of natural resources;
  • prevention of impairment of dams and reservoirs;
  • assistance in maintaining the navigability of rivers and harbors;
  • by the application of these measures, providing for flood control, preserving wildlife, protecting the tax base, and protecting public lands.

Primarily funded through grants and cooperative agreements, the district values collaboration with partners and strives to deliver top-quality public service and education on best practices. Kanabec SWCD often works across jurisdictional boundaries, including private lands, to serve the residents and landowners of Kanabec County, offering financial and technical assistance to landowners and land managers to support effective resource stewardship.

Our Mission

Kanabec SWCD is dedicated to promoting the wise and sustainable use of our land and water resources. We work with and empower landowners and community groups on conservation options, partner with other agencies, educate the public, provide technical assistance, administer state programs, and serve as a county-wide information and referral center for soil, water, and natural resources.
